TONGO SAIL INN – BONBONON

What a place this is….It’s been called a retirement home for old pissheads, a place to hide away, a yachties paradise and somewhere to take the piss out of a long haired git.

This is Mikes’ personal name for a very good friend called Nigel, who runs this place, along with his wife, Pilar and a host of helpers/employees/family.

It’s amazing in its’ simplicity and appeal. It’s a paradise, hideaway and pisshead seclusion. Nigel has several rooms on offer, a lot of which are owned by absentee expats, all the walls can be opened to create an open air bedroom, the shower/toilet area is at the rear down a couple of steps, walled in and with no roof, but flowers in a bed around the area, private and outside, a good mix, it’s nice to have a shower looking at the stars with no-one looking in at you.

Food is excellent, derived from Nigels’ mix of English/Aussie and Pilars’ Asian heritage. Not expensive, and if there are a few of you then call a couple of days ahead and get him to make one of his fantastic barbecue lunches or dinners, there’s enough food for 20 if you order for 12 people-no joke!!!

Rooms are very reasonable at around 700 pesos, and Nigel and Pilar go in to Dumaguete every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and will bring you back to their place in the trusty old jeep after an hour or so driving South from the main city.

Yachts abound in this safe, free anchorage and Nigel has his boat building yard in the local fishing village you pass by just before the resort. His boats vary from exportable 40 foot catamarans, through dinghies, to a new fast launch boat which will suit dive shops very well for coping with bigger waves.
