Manila - Boracay

We are in Boracay!

manila boracay leg r1

Leaving everyone else in a frenzied state of preparation at the Manila Yacht Club, we departed at 8.30 am for Puerto Galera.

Flat calm seas from the Club to Cape Santiago, meant a cruising speed of 30 knots, very comfortable, with a few cold beers. Things got a little rougher after the lighthouse, but nothing to worry about, and a straight across line was taken to the Manila channel entrance to one of the most beautiful bays in the world.

After a few beers, catching up with friends, and a re-fuelling job, we headed over to Alan Burrells lovely waterside villa, (www.yacht-charter-philippines.com), for a shower and change and then had a good dinner at the Puerto Galera Yacht Club, before retiring to bed for a peaceful nights sleep, albeit some very worrying howling from the wind!!??

Next morning, a little worried about the all night wind, and what it could do to the sea, we headed out to find fairly flat conditions and 6 yachts still not abreast of Puerto, tacking as they were up the Verde channel.

We had picked up Chris Howarth from Fragrant Harbour magazine Hong Kong, who came along to take photos of yachts as we passed them, managed to get good shots of probably ten of them on our way to a beautiful anchorage at Banton Island, just North of Tablas. Anchored in a lovely sandy spot and had a couple of beers and a sandwich. Still pretty calm conditions.

We then held the shelter of Tablas going South, to arrive off Boracay Beach just after the biggest yacht in the race, Frank Pongs hundred and something ‘Maiden’. What a stunning boat, huge and expensive with a very pro crew.

Most of the other yachts would have still been 60 miles back down the track at this time, and we heard later that they were becalmed around Maestre do Campo Island.

So, Boracay Beach, and a smiling Adam there to meet us and arrange transportation for 6 people and a whole ton of gear to his hotel, Villa Sunset , (www.villasunsetboracay.com),

A very good looking Spanish Villa style resort with only 8 rooms surrounding a small swimming pool, but finished to a high standard, and all brand new! Very friendly staff, and a menu from another of my favourite places, Calypso Divers/Restaurant.

Missed the sunset at Chalhs’ bar due to feverish sunburn, but Mike will be watching it every evening for the next 4 days before the continuation of the trip on it’s next exciting leg, commencing Friday…..

We have some friends and sponsors who help make our trip possible, so please check them out on the web and in person on your next visit!
